Helping to keep it clean

We're helping to protect the countryside against accidental oil and diesel spills.

Our trailers, used by Rix Petroleum, are kept on stand-by at its depots around the UK to ensure a quick response in case of an emergency.

On board are absorbent materials plus booms to contain spills of domestic heating oil, farm fuel and commercial fuels, plus other equipment to clean up the site after an accident.

Using Ifor Williams Trailers means the equipment can be taken quickly to a variety of sites, from farms and homes to road accidents or industrial premises.

They were supplied to Rix by Hull-based Ripon Farm Services, who are distributors for Ifor Williams Trailers.

Spokesman Nigel Bowden said: "The trailers are very popular because they are ideal for a variety of uses. But I was surprised when I realised that these trailers were also being used in such a specialised role – even if they very rarely actually need to go out to an emergency."

Rix Health and Safety Manager Steve Moody said: "We very rarely have to use the equipment, but it’s on constant stand-by.

"We would use it if there was an accident with a tanker out on the road, or if there’s a spill with a tank. This could be while the tank is being filled, or a problem with a customer’s tank at some point.

"Touch wood, we never have to use the equipment, but it’s good to know it’s ready at a moment’s notice.

"We needed something that was easy to transport and to hitch-up quickly, and able to get to different locations easily, and so Ifor Williams Trailers seemed the perfect, and economic, answer to what we required," added Steve.

"As a responsible, independent, family owned company built over 140 years, we see environmental management as an important responsibility and we take practical measures to comply with all relevant environmental laws and regulations as a minimum standard."

Rix is a family owned business that specialises in supplying and delivering millions of litres of domestic heating oil, farm fuel and commercial fuels to thousands of customers every year. It supplies commercial fuel, heating oil, lubricants and storage tanks to heating services such as oil boiler & Aga cooker servicing and repairs.

Rix Petroleum’s emergency response units are held at Hull in East Yorkshire, Spalding in Lincolnshire, Market Drayton in Shropshire, Coleshill in the Midlands, Felton in Northumberland, Attleborough in Norfolk, plus Montrose in Scotland.

Andrew Reece Jones, the Design Engineering Manager at Ifor Williams Trailers, said: "I am glad that our trailers are doing their bit to help protect the environment."
