Trailer firm still out in front after 30 years

When he took over a new business John Page knew it was a huge commitment, but he didn’t expect to be still putting in 72 hours a week 30 years later.

It is a labour of love, however, for John is as determined as ever to ensure that customers get the best possible service.

It was in 1982 that John took over the distributorship for Ifor Williams Trailers in Biddenden, near Ashford in Kent.

According to John, it was the manufacturers’ good reputation which helped the Page enterprise go from strength to strength - and celebrate their 30th anniversary this year.

He said: "When we started there were just seven different models but nowadays we have up to 130 trailers on display at any one time."

The freehold of the site was bought in 1988 and in addition to the sale, repair and servicing of trailers they also continue to sell petrol. It is one of the few remaining village stations in the area.

The focus of the business has changed over the years, however.

"About 20 years ago we sold more horseboxes than anything else, but now we sell much more across the range to builders and other trades," said John, who also runs a smallholding.

"Over the 30 years we must have sold about 15,000 trailers and I am optimistic about the future."

His eldest son William, 38, also works in the business and will shortly be taking over as Managing Director, but at the age of 69 John has no plans to retire.

"I’m in work at six o’clock every morning and work six days a week, whereas I used to work seven," he said.

"But my father had to be forced to stop work at the age of 91 so there’s plenty of time yet. It keeps me occupied," he joked.

Though they are not employed in the trailer business his other two children, daughter Michala and Andres are also directors of the company.

"We pride ourselves on customer care and are always prepared to go the extra mile for our customers," added John. "Ifor Williams Trailers have a very good reputation, which makes our task that much easier."

John Page Trailers plays an important part in the local community, not only employing staff and meeting the needs of customers across Kent but also in sponsoring the nearby Bromley Green under-11s who play in the Ashford and District League.

Peter Nesbitt, the Business Development Manager at Ifor Williams Trailers, said: "We would like to congratulate John and all the team on reaching such an important milestone in their history.

"John Page Trailers are a greatly valued distributor and, after their long and distinguished record, they know the trailer business inside out which is good for us and great for their customers.

"I would like to wish them all the best for the next 30 years!"
