Are there any special requirements in France? Trailers over 500kg gross weight require a Carte Grise to be used with a French registered vehicle. The procedure to be followed to obtain registration is as follows: Contact, preferably by fax or e-mail, Ifor Williams France with the FULL serial number and the exact model of your trailer, to establish whether or not your trailer model is approved in France and if there are any modifications to be made to the trailer. If everything is in order, you will be asked to send by post to Ifor Williams France, the following documents: 1. The original sales invoice you received at the time of purchase, which must include the serial number of the trailer. 2. A copy of this sales invoice. 3. A copy of a proof of address in France such as EDF or France Telecom bill. 4. A copy of proof of identity e.g. passport or carte de sejour. 5. A cheque for 100 euros to Ifor Williams France. 6. Photo of manufacturer plate from the trailer drawbar. If the trailer was registered outside the UK in another EC country (Belgium, Holland etc): 7. A copy of the original paperwork "carte grise" from that country. Within 5-8 weeks you will then be issued with a "Notice Descriptive" document for your trailer, a "demande d'immatriculation" and some times, a new plate (some trailers are approved to a different capacity in France) to enable you to obtain a French "carte grise" DIRECTLY from your vehicle registration office (your "Prefecture").
