Frequently Asked Questions regarding technical issues of the tyres, brakes and wheels used on our trailers.

    5. How does the handbrake / parking brake operate?

To overcome the auto-reverse feature, the handbrake is designed to provide additional travel. It continues to expand the brake after the shoes have collapsed, re-applying the brakes.

To ensure that the brakes continue to be applied should the trailer start to roll back after the handbrake has been applied, the system incorporates an "energy store". This is either a spring that is compressed when the handbrake is fully applied or one that is compressed when the handbrake is released and applies the force automatically when the brake is applied. This does not require the operator to ensure that the handbrake is fully applied and therefore is the preferred option. All current Ifor Williams trailers have this type.
