4. How was the braking system disabled for reversing before auto-reverse systems were introduced?

The brakes had to be disabled manually. Unless you had a helper on hand, this involved getting out of the vehicle and operating a lever on the trailer coupling. To make matters worse, the lever disengaged if the trailer was moved forward and had to be re-engaged again before reversing again. As you can imagine, this was far from convenient!
